In my own work, I explain to people that even though the tasks may be difficult, the process can still be fun. Obviously, there is a time for fierce concentration and serious decisions, but a larger amount of time is spent with the mundane and that is when a sense of humor is critical. The hunt is the culmination of months or years of planning and ultimately the purpose is to have fun and enjoy the complete experience. A PH combines all the traits required to hunt at the highest level and never forget that we are still here to have fun and generate memories that will be shared with generations.
I won’t exaggerate about hunting all over the world with hundreds of guides, but I have done a fair share and when the hunt is over and you are back home with the usual circle of friends and family, you tell them about the people you hunted with. In rare instances, you feel like the guide would be one of those already in your usual circle. Early into my first African hunt, I knew that he would be one of those guys that I would be comfortable with in the wild or back home with other family and friends around a fire.”
