The majority of foreign hunters will hunt a selection of South Africa’s plains game on their first hunt. It offers fantastic value for money, a very challenging, as well as a very diverse hunt. With South Africa offering the most huntable species on the continent, Amaphisi Safaris offers a wide range of free-range plains game, as well as well as fully self-sustaining herds of animals on large came conservation areas, at an affordable price.
Pursuing buffalo in the thick bush of Zululand is one of the most exciting hunts there is. We have various properties in Kwa-Zulu Natal, mainly in Northern KZN where we hunt these giant bovines, some of them never having been hunted before. Properties are large enough that the herds are completely self-sustaining.
Although the African Bushpig, potamochoerus larvaus, one of the two native pig species in South Africa, the other being the much more common warthog, are strictly part of what is deemed plains game, they require such a different method of hunting that we have put them under a different heading.
Hunting the Tiny Ten species in Southern Africa is a great accomplishment for any ethical hunter. Although they are Africa’s smallest antelope they can amount to a lot of hours of hard hunting, patiently stalking through, either, very thick coastal sand forests, savannah thornveld or even dry desert like areas.

In my own work, I explain to people that even though the tasks may be difficult, the process can still be fun. Obviously, there is a time for fierce concentration and serious decisions, but a larger amount of time is spent with the mundane and that is when a sense of humor is critical. The hunt is the culmination of months or years of planning and ultimately the purpose is to have fun and enjoy the complete experience. A PH such as Dewald, combines all the traits required to hunt at the highest level and never forget that we are still here to have fun and generate memories that will be shared with generations.
I won’t exaggerate about hunting all over the world with hundreds of guides, but I have done a fair share and when the hunt is over and you are back home with the usual circle of friends and family, you tell them about the people you hunted with. In rare instances, you feel like the guide would be one of those already in your usual circle.
